First Vice-President Dr. Jane Ansah, founder of the Dr. Jane Ansah Foundation, has donated agricultural inputs and business items to farmers from Lunyina and Chipofya irrigation schemes, and other vulnerable people in Traditional Authority Chikulamayembe, Rumphi District.
Speaking during the handover ceremony today at Kanyerere Primary School ground, Dr. Ansah said the donation was meant to complement government efforts to support active farmers and food-insecure families across the country.
She commended farmers in the area for their commitment to ensuring food availability throughout the year through irrigation farming. Dr. Ansah also referenced this year’s El Niño climate report, emphasizing that irrigation is the only sustainable solution to climate-related challenges.
Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe thanked the Vice-President for supporting farmers in his area and assured her of continued collaboration to eradicate hunger.
Rumphi Central Member of Parliament Dr. Matthews Chinombo Mtumbuka, together with Councilor Alfred Butao, hailed the initiative as key to boosting the agricultural sector. They encouraged more people to embrace irrigation farming to achieve food and economic security at household level.
Mtumbuka further appealed to government to lower fertilizer prices and increase tobacco prices on the market, noting that low tobacco prices are negatively affecting farmers nationwide.
Items donated included bags of fertilizer, maize, soya and beans seeds, bicycles, and sewing machines. The intervention is expected to support at least 5,000 farmers and vulnerable people in the area.
